Why cooks choose us

Others take a slice. We don't.

Many food platforms keep a cut of every sale. On NeighbourPlate you set your price and keep every penny of it.

  • Free to join and free to list. No sign-up fee, no monthly fee.
  • Free food safety toolkit. Diary, allergen register, supplier records and more.
  • Free training and learning resources. Build your confidence, step by step.

Optional extras such as listing boosts and the Supplies shop are paid for, and charges can apply if you cancel an order you've accepted. Everything is shown before you commit, and set out in the Seller Terms.

What you'll need

Cooking at home the right way.

UK law has clear rules for selling food. We make each step as simple as we can.

Be 18 or over, in the UK

Sellers must be adults living in the United Kingdom.

Register with your council

Register your food business with your local council. It's free. You'll normally need to wait 28 days after registering before you can sell.

A food hygiene rating of 3 or above

Once your council has inspected you, your rating must be 3 or higher. A new business with no rating yet is not treated as having a low one.

A food safety system

Use Safer Food Better Business, another recognised system, or the built-in pack in the NeighbourPlate app.

Proof of your business

A council registration document or hygiene certificate, so we know the business is yours.

Your tax details

UK law requires online marketplaces to hold sellers' tax details and report them to HMRC. They're private and never shown to buyers. Your own tax and registration choices stay yours.

A quiet British terraced street at golden hour, where neighbours hand over packaged home-cooked meals at front doors and over a garden gate
Good food travels the shortest way. Down the street, from your kitchen to your neighbour's door.
How it works

From application to first order.

Apply

Tell us about your food business, upload your proof, and choose your food safety system. Our team reviews every application.

List your meals

Add photos, set your prices, declare allergens, and say when buyers can collect. You can offer extras too.

Cook and hand over

Buyers reserve and pay in the app. You cook, then confirm the handover by scanning their QR code or typing their 6-digit number, and get paid.

Sell your way

Three ways to sell. Pick what fits your week.

Cook to order, sell what you've already made, or take bespoke requests. Mix and match, and change it whenever you like.

Reserve

Cook to order. Zero waste.

Choose your collection day and an order deadline. Buyers reserve portions before it closes, so you only cook what's already sold.

  • Know your numbers before you light the hob
  • Add optional extras, like a side or a sauce, to earn more per order
Ready Now

Cooked a little extra? Sell it.

List food you've already made and let nearby neighbours reserve it for collection today. Perfect for batch cooks and spare portions.

  • Turn spare portions into income
  • Neighbours see it straight away, and collect from you
Custom Order

Bespoke requests, your price.

Buyers describe what they'd like. You chat in the app, send a formal offer with your price and timing, and cook once they accept.

  • Birthday cakes, party trays and special diets
  • Everything agreed in writing, in one place
Your toolkit

Everything in one app.

Food Safety Hub

Diary, cleaning and temperature records, suppliers, training and an allergen register, ready if an inspector calls.

Your private recipe book

Keep your recipes in one place. It's yours alone and never shared with buyers.

Reviews and boosts

Build your reputation with reviews from real orders, and optionally boost a listing to be seen first.

Questions

Before you start.

What does it cost to sell?

Joining and listing are free, and there is 0% commission: you keep every penny of the price you set, including any extras. The food safety toolkit and training are free too. A few things are optional or conditional: listing boosts and the Supplies shop are paid for, and charges can apply if you cancel an order you've accepted. Everything is shown before you commit, and set out in the Seller Terms.

Whose address do buyers see?

UK consumer law says a trader must be identified before a sale. Your listing shows your name, your food business name and your registered business address, which is the address on your food business registration. Exact collection details are given to a buyer once they order.

Who is responsible for my food?

You are. You're an independent food business, and you're responsible for food safety, allergen information and labelling. NeighbourPlate provides the marketplace and the tools to help, but doesn't take that responsibility from you.

Do I need insurance?

We strongly recommend public and product liability insurance that covers selling food from home through an online marketplace, and telling your insurer that you sell through NeighbourPlate.

How and when am I paid?

Payouts go to your bank through our secure payment provider after the order is collected, with a short protection window so buyers can report a genuine problem. You'll see every order and payout in the app.
